Under 9 September Newsletter
Posted 6/9/2010
WELCOME !!!
Welcome to the September newsletter and the excitement builds as this month marks the start of our first competitive league. Over the season we are hoping all boys, both those which have been with us since U6’s and those new boys will enjoy training together as a squad and support each other, have some fun and improve their footballing ability (mine too as Cam will point out !)
New Players
We’d like to welcome Chris and Connor to the club who have decided to join this season. We’d also like to point out we’ve had a number of boys turn up with other boys for training sessions over the Summer and whilst this has been ok, now we need to know in advance if a player / parent intends to bring a new player for two main reasons. Firstly, it may impact our approach to training and secondly we are trying to keep the number of players to a manageable level for the benefit of all currently at the club. Given this can you please contact me or Steve in advance to check before bringing a new player.
League Team and Intention
As we stated in the last newsletter, the attached is a link to the Youth Combination website. Here you will be able to see our fixtures for the season and I’m guessing in due course the league table too http://www.footballcombination.com/under9sa.htm. As stated we want to do well in the league and will address our team selection and tactics accordingly. We have already learnt through our preseason tournaments how hard it can be to satisfy both players and parents in meeting this aim and we are listening to feedback and will take this on board. That said, we still want ALL the boys to have fun, do their best and enjoy their football and this may mean that we decide for the team or for the individual player the best approach may be different to those you may expect. Remember we give up our time for free to manage / train these boys and like them we want the best for all but as stated “We also acknowledge that next season we will need to think carefully around team selection and how we use league and friendly games to develop all the lads in the best way to ensure we continue to meet out overriding aim of having fun without destroying boys confidence. We realise this means we will not keep everyone 100% happy all of the time but please do talk to us if you have concerns as we do want to keep this group of lads together”.
Back to Training / Friendlies
Just in case you have not seen my email we return to official training this Thursday 2nd September at Anglian Windows social club. This will be our main training session with league games on Sunday and as such we’d like to try and maintain as close as 100% attendance as possible. We intend over this season to run training session targeted on different disciplines, such as defending, attacking etc and will be assisted by John and Steve in drawing up appropriate drills. We will as stated earlier instil tighter discipline in these sessions including a “sin bin”. Saturdays we have yet to confirm our approach but is likely to be every other week at Felthorpe. As stated in last months newsletter these sessions will be primarily aimed at more fun type drills and to use for freindlies to help develop all players and experiment as we alluded to last time.
Waveney Tournament Report
Sunday 22nd marked our second preseason competitive tournament at Waveney (Lowestoft). Once again the boys did me, Steve and the club proud. After an initial shaky start they qualified top of their group with three wins, 1 draw and a defeat (to the old nemesis St Benets). The team faced Waveney Lions in the quarter final and managed to win a tight fought game 2-1 to progress to the semis. In the semis the team met Breydon Utd who they’d draw 0-0 with in the group stage. Again the game was hard fought and ended 1-1, despite Jimmy having a freekick cleared off the line and Ben shooting narrowly wide luck was not with us. This meant that once again we found ourselves in a penalty shootout, however this time it was not meant to be and the boys lost out 2-0.
