Score: Taverham Ladies 3-1 Hethersett Athletic Ladies

Report:

Taverham Ladies faced Hethersett Athletic Ladies in the quarter finals of the county cup at Hinks Meadow knowing a strong performance would be needed against the Eastern Region Premier Division side.

Taverham made a strong start and forced Hethersett back with a series of surging attacks. The home side were rewarded for their attacking endeavour when they were awarded a free kick on the quarter of an hour mark out by the touch line. Kelly Ayers swung in a good free kick which Laura Sutton headed into the net to give Taverham a 1 nil lead.

The goal saw some more sustained pressure by Hethersett, but Taverham attacked again and the pressure paid off when a loose back pass by the Hethersett defence was intercepted by Lauren Taylor who calmly slotted past the goalkeeper into the far corner.

Taverham fully deserved the lead at half time and started the second half as they finished the first with some good attacking pressure. This again paid off when Laura Sutton fired home from the edge of the penalty area. Hethersett threw players forward to try and force a goal, but Taverham battled hard and held out until the 80th minute when Hethersett headed home from a corner.

A frantic final 10 minutes ensued and Hethersett were awarded a penalty in the last minute for an innocuous looking challenge in the area, only for the spot kick to be smashed past the post.

The final whistle went to finish a very entertaining and hard fought game.

Taverham have been drawn to play Thorpe United in the semi finals on 18th March 2012, venue TBC.
